Spending a penny, pointing Percy at the porcelain, doing a number one, having a Jimmy riddle. Whatever way you say it, it’s easy to use toilet humour to make a joke out of going for a wee.
But we understand that for some men living with the outcomes of a prostate cancer diagnosis, it’s no laughing matter. They can suffer from continence issues, erectile problems, fatigue and pain.
That’s before the knock to self-confidence. The feeling that all of this makes them less of a man. It’s something that many survivors feel embarrassed to talk about with friends, family or even their GP.
Physical activity and weight control can really help with some of the side-effects of treatment, including muscle loss and tiredness.
Which is why we are supporting the development of a programme called Prostate Active Living Support (P.A.L.S.), an activity-based support programme designed specifically for men who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer.
P.A.L.S. will work in small groups and uses exercise and activity to help men improve their health and wellbeing after treatment, take back control and learn new ways of managing ongoing issues.
With a pilot programme due to start in 2024, it follows in the footsteps of the established In the Pink programme and builds on its track record of delivering tailored courses led by professional and experienced teachers.
It will also be free.
We understand that it can be difficult to talk and that moving on from diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer is hard. But in tough times, we hope you’ll trust P.A.L.S. to get you through.
